Candidates line up to build Romanian nuclear plant
Bucharest (AFP) Oct 2, 2007 Around 30 groups are interested in taking part in a project to build the third and fourth reactors of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in south-east Romania, Nuclearelectrica said Tuesday, three weeks ahead of a bid deadline. The companies included construction group Lafarge of France, power company Enel of Italy, as well as German utilities E.ON and RWE, the state-owned nuclear operator said in a statement. Other interested companies include Italian firm Ansaldo, which built the first two reactors with Canada's EACL, Czech utility CEZ, steel group ArcelorMittal, and French banks BNP Paribas and Societe Generale, the statement said. Nuclearelectrica said it had received offers from 13 other companies, which had all submitted bids last year. But the tender for bids was then suspended owing to a change in government strategy over the financing of the project. Two reactors have already entered into service, the second in August, supplying around 17-18 percent of the country's electricity needs, Nuclearelectrica said.
