Atlas Wins Hispasat 1C Ride

Madrid, Jan. 27, 1998 - The Madrid, Spain-based Hispasat S.A. company has chosen the Lockheed Martin/International Launch Services' Atlas IIAS to lift the firm's Hispasat 1C satellite into orbit, ILS announced Monday in San Diego, Calif. Aerospatiale Espace of France will build the spacecraft, which is to be launched from Cape Canaveral Air Station in Florida in late 1999.

The satellite is to be inserted into final geostationary orbit and will join the previous Hispasat 1A and 1B, providing direct to home television services. SpaceCast learned late Monday that the contract award marks the first Hispasat launch contract for ILS, adding a new customer to the firm's clientele. The Atlas IIAS is currently the largest Atlas in service, and has a 100% launch success rate.

Satellite Launch To Boost DTH In India

The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India.
