Fake invoices land Chinese official in trouble
Beijing, Aug 8, 2006 A Chinese official in charge of a child care organization has been charged with embezzlement after handing in fake invoices totalling 1.25 million yuan (156,000 dollars), state media said Tuesday. Zhao Shunyi, formerly the head of the China Children's Center, is also accused of taking bribes totaling 280,000 yuan for unspecified favors to unidentified companies, the Xinhua news agency reported. Xinhua's source was the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court, indicating that she would also be tried by the court. The center she headed, which conducts research into children's development, is classified as a non-governmental organization (NGO), but is affiliated to the state agency All China Women's Federation. The case follows the release early this year of new regulations strengthening supervision over NGOs and how they spend their money, Xinhua said.
