Chemical blast toll in China rises to 22

The toll from an explosion that ripped through a chemical plant in eastern China rose on Saturday to 22 dead and 29 injured, state media said.

Some 71 people were inside the plant when the blast occurred on Friday morning at the Yancheng Fuyuan Chemical Co. site, a Sino-German joint venture in Jiangsu province's Sheyang county, Xinhua news agency said.

It said 21 managed to escape.

Preliminary investigations suggested that workers at the plant, which had yet to begin production, were mainly to blame for the accident, Xinhua said.

Thousands of local residents who were evacuated on Friday amid concerns over the release of toxic gas had now returned to their homes after being given the all-clear by environmental protection authorities, the report said.

Drums of chlorine and nitric acid at the site were not damaged in the blast and tests of the air and water near the plant showed they were not seriously polluted, Xinhua said.

Fatal industrial accidents are a frequent occurrence in China, caused partly because the economic boom has forced production to go into overdrive.

A total of 15,396 people died in 12,800 industrial, mining and commercial enterprise accidents in 2005, according to government figures.

The number of dead or missing in China from Typhoon Kaemi passed 100 on Friday, as gales and rains continued to batter the nation's densely populated eastern and central provinces, state media said.
